crabtree caught two touchdown passes, helping the niners win that playoff game against the packers. they have been cooperating with the investigation. he was not detained or arrested. and he has agreed to make himself available to investigators in the future. some fans we spoke to are questioning these allegations. >> i think she's lying. i mean, you know, why would you do that? you know? he comes to san francisco getting whatever he wants. he's a hero here. >> it is definitely a real sad situation. but hopefully that he will be able to play in the game this sunday. he's a phenomenal player as we really want our 49ers to win. the investigation is not expected to stop crabtree from playing tomorrow. meanwhile the niners general manager says they are aware of the allegations, but they will not comment on the matter because it's an ongoing legal process. 25-year-old crabtree is the second best receiver in the nfl along with the two touchdowns on saturday as he caught nine passes for 119 yards. but the former first round pick

has always been a bit of a mystery as he rarely speaks to the media, when he does, he typically wears the trademark sunglasses. he missed five games in his rookie season thanks to a 71- day hold out that actually required mc hammer's help to broker a deal. and the team has no media availability until after the game tomorrow when we'll probably hear a little bit more about this. this weekend's developments are just one more thing for the young quarterback to ignore the kick off time. and now they indicated he is focused and ready for tomorrow's big game. cbs a reporter on what will make him tick. >> reporter: he may be the hottest player in the nfl right now, but kaprenick doesn't see it. >> this is 100% the truth. this is where we were all season and off season. >> reporter: how about reaching the childhood dream of playing for the 49ers and going to the conference championship game

reporting. for more on the post-season coverage and to upload your own photo, duoto our website -- go to our website right now. it's a big time in washington, d.c. preparations are in high gear for monday's inauguration of president obama for his second term. at the same time people are marking dr. martin luther king's birthday with a day of service. cbs reporter randall pinkston is live in washington now with more on everything going on, a busy day there, randall. >> reporter: quite a bit going on here today, indeed. there are preparations we can see, of course, all the rises that have been set up on the grounds of the capitol and along the parade route. the fences that have been put in place to make sure that everything could be secure. and of course the preparations, we can't see. all the law enforcement officers are making sure that everyone will be safe. but today the focus, it is on a day of service as a part of the inaugural weekend. construction crews are

working around the clock to prepare their capital for the second inauguration of president barack obama. it is a once in every four years job boom for the d.c. area contractors. >> yes, we have almost every skill under this roof. carpenters, the cabinetmakers, welders, graphic designers. painters. you name it. we have every skill. >> reporter: while the day of the inauguration has been known for years, contracts aren't signed and plans aren't approved until early january. >> it's not a lot of time. you would be surprised as we have worked 24/7, multiple shifts to be able to accomplish the right of way things. >> reporter: festivities get underway later this morning. today is the national day of service in honor of dr. martin luther king's birthday, which is on monday. the same day that president obama will take the ceremonial oath of office. after the president's address and of course the parade, the celebration will focus on three inaugural balls. the air force staff sergeant is looking forward to that.

the career medic and the afghanistan veteran was selected to advance with them at the commander in chief's ball. >> anyone would be noted for dancing. a little out outsider line. but you know i'm excited as i will do my best with anything. >> monday's crowd is expected to be significantly smaller than the 1.8 million that showed up four years ago. but even half that would set the record for the second inauguration. and we must point out the symbolic significance of the fact that president obama is being sworn in for his second term of office on the steps of the capitol. 50 years ago in august, he made his famous i have a dream speech on the opposite end of the map on the steps of the lincoln memorial. that dream, of course, talked about the day when america, they would reach a sense of equality and of course the election of president obama, the nation's first african american president that has to be seen as the ultimate political expression of that

equality. reporting live in washington, i'm randall pinkston -- pinkston, back to you. >> how will it differ from four years ago? >> reporter: well first of all it will be a ceremonial inauguration, not the official inauguration as we have mentioned earlier on the actual date of the inauguration. it has to be on january 20. that's a sunday. the public wants to witness it themselves. it will be a second ceremonial inauguration on monday that people, they will be able to attend. >> all right, live for us in washington, enjoy the festivities, randall. around here a lot warmer than what he is experiencing there in d.c. and sunny skies this weekend. >> yeah, i was there for the inauguration four years ago. >> you were in >> it was freezing. i thought it was sunny, but freezing. >> makes us feel lucky. >> yeah, kind of like the temperatures where she had this morning with a high surf

advisory, that will be a factor if you are headed to the beach. if you are hanging around here, it will be beautiful. out the doors, the numbers, they will with near 50 degrees at the coast about an hour and a half. if you head out to 30 this morning, they will be covering up the lower 40s around the bay and inland. so a chilly start on saturday, finishing nice though. 29 in concord and oakland. look at santa rosa, still chilly. 27 degrees. we'll have the entire forecast for you in a fews. and the big mavericks surf competition is happening tomorrow. spectators are trying to catch the best views of the big show. and you do have to follow some new rules as this year the beach and all the cliffs will be off limits. the same goes to all roads. the best way to view the competition is at the mavericks festival held at the hotel and spa at princeton harbor. the event is half a mile out so it will be tough to see anyway. you will certainly be better off viewing it from the

jumbotron. >> there will be cameras of the surfers everywhere you can think of, all feeding live video back to shore. organizers, they expect the beautiful weather and the largest crowds ever both on the shore and on the water. now other bay area headlines this morning. a richmond man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and the man he thought they were dating was sentenced to death, convicted in november for the 2009 murders at the richmond bridge toll plaza. the killer told the judge yesterday that the sentence does not matter because he does not think it will be carried out. the woman whose cell phone video sparked a domestic violence investigation against the san francisco sheriff is filing a lawsuit. they shot that video of the bruised arm of his wife lopez. and they are suing him for defamation. madison lives next door to him and lopez told cbs 5 last year that they destroyed their life by releasing that video. things are heating up out of the oakland city council chambers. they would like to seal off the

balconies as a safety precaution during tuesday's meetings as they say the demonstrators have been disruptive and they pose a potential threat to the people below. now, reducing the public feeding will be opposed though by the unions and the free speech advocates. well, 49ers colin kaepernick making a big view here. why fans say it is terrible timing. >> nothing i put on my body will give me that self confidence. still to come the bare bones of this beauty experiment. we'll be right back.

the foreign hostages. 11 militants also died. it's not clear if the stand off is over yet. now, one out of 12 other hostages killed was an american man from texas. some who escaped said that they trapped themselves with the explosives. the house republican leaders would like to vote on a three-month extension of the debt limit. that measure would require that both the house and the senate, that they passed a budget or go without paying. a short-term extension will be a new strategy to force the government spending and a departure from the republicans and the earlier position that any increase, they must involve the cuts of the same size. it comes after they told congress that they could not remove the deadline to install that there. as we have been talking about

another chilly morning here, brian. >> yes, indeed. it looks as if, you know, there will be a little bit of the patchy fog, but nothing too dramatic. the numbers today, some parts in theout east bay. out the door it is chilly around the bay area and temperatures expected to be about 49 degrees if you are, you know, along the coast out for some coffee this morning. and temperatures in the lower 40s. just in the early going. in the mid to upper 30s. and so it will be a little bit of the bite for you in that area for the, you know, areas here. but that will be pretty usual. it is january afterall. now, 29 in concord and 39 for oakland. livermore's got 29 degrees at the airport, 40 degrees. and down in san jose, 37 right now. santa rosa is waking up to 27 degrees with the high surf advisory posting for the bay area and the entire bay area coast and all the way down to the san mateo county. strong rip currents associated with that very warm period of

swells on out there from 25 to 27 seconds, resulting in some pretty good waves crashing along the shoreline here too to have a care if you are headed to the beach. satellite and radar, the time lapse here with the high pressure in full command of the pacific coast and any of the showers that will be well north of washington and we're going to be looking for things to be sunny and warmer in the bay area today with numbers mostly in the 60s. a big change from last week as well. and the next chance of rain for the bay area, it will not be coming in until next weekend on the future cast looking at things that will be staying clear today. and this is how it looks for the day today. your pinpoint forecast, overnight lows tonight, 37 degrees at napa. fairfield 35. and forecast highs for today, they look nice. now, 60 degrees at fairfield and 61 at livermore.

sports illustrated. mike sugerman tells us about the curse. an honor and a curse? >> he should be concerned that he is on the cover of the sports illustrated magazine. >> reporter: throughout their 60-year history, cover boys and girls have had trouble following their moment of fame. the milwaukee braves was on the first cover and immediately the team broke a nine-game winning streak later breaking his hand. tim tebow went on a three-game losing streak right afterwards. jake cutler's cover, the injure rhode island the niners made it and lost their championship game against the giants. some did a study and found that almost 30% of the time the

they are making a tortillini for a nice italian. >> it is tortellini. yes, every kid loves tortellini because it is so warm and hearty and delicious. >> and it's cheesy. >> yes, that's right. we appreciate tortellini right here. this is spinach tortellini. >> yes, we're cooking it with garlic. once you cook the tortellini, you just wait until they bubble up like pillows, then you put it in the sauce and we add some pasta water because the cheese is going to thicken it up. >> a little more pasta water. i want to go with the cheese. >> now, you put that tortellini in there, i'll add which one? >> this is a strong cheese with their own personality. the next one is a little more pasta water. you want to add that as you're going. perfect, that will be a

fog and low clouds around the bay area and highs near 60 degrees. high surf advisories are posted around the bay. at the door this morning, temperatures will recover in the 40st for the most point, but a lot of sun out there. >> we had the big game tomorrow and now a scandal to talk about that. san francisco 49ers, wide receiver, michael crabtree that will be facing serious accusations of sexual assault. our cameras were rolling in santa clara yesterday as crabtree almost missed the bus headed for the airport. they wouldn't have left without him though. he is playing tomorrow, but according to police the sexual assault incident happened at a san francisco hotel room early sunday morning. hours before he caught two touchdown passes helping the niners win a game against the packers. the wide receiver has been cooperating with this investigation. he was not detained or arrested. and he has agreed to make himself available to investigators in the future. we are getting a little closer of a look at colin kaepernick in the meantime.

cbs 5 reporter don ford explains where they will get the best view. >> reporter: it's on. the big wave surf contest is set for sunday with beautiful weather, the largest crowds ever are expected both on the shore and on the water. >> i highly recommend not watching it from a boat. sometimes the 50-foot waves. and you know those small pleasure crafts, they do not do so well in those situations. >> they were swept off their feet. this year all beaches will be banned and parking, they will be highly restricted. how do you see the surfers? >> the best way to see the mavericks is at the mavericks festival. >> he's got a plan. >> a lot of people got hurt being out at the beach. and you have a webcast and the live streaming jumbotron to watch the action as it happens. >> now there will be cameras

mounted on surfers on their boards on the rescue craft. everywhere that you could think of, all set back to shore to this parking lot behind the hotel. the hotel manager says that the beach, they were always a bad idea. >> the event, it is a half mile out so it will be tough to see anyway. you will certainly be better off viewing it from the jumbotrom. >> reporter: they contested him here. >> and there will be action replays and they will be able to have food and beverages. so i think that it will be like a festival and it will be just great. >> reporter: no one really knows how many people will be showing up for sunday for the mavericks. but it's with a call for them on the water. at half moon bay, cbs 5. notre dame's linebacker manti te'o has talked for the first time since that whole girlfriend hoax happened last night. and he was never involved in creating that hoax saying, "when they hear the facts they

will know there is no way i could be a part of this." he insists he was the victim of a cruel joke. he also tells espn that his friends have apologized for that girlfriend hoax. lance armstrong's lies didn't just lead the cycling world or their fans down. they got emotional when talking about how one of his children would be defending their father here to the other kids in school. >> i told luke. i said don't defend me anymore. >> lance armstrong has shared that in part two of this interview with oprah winfrey last night after years of denying it. they admitted to using the performance enhancing drugs. they spoke directly to those who needed to wear their live strong bracelets.

they set that up where they say they are out of ideas. that's why leaders from around the world met at the international conference in san francisco. they're brainstorming and exchanging ideas. the theory is what appears to be a cosmetic issue leading to serious crimes look shootings. they say that most of the city's tagging is gang related. they're marking their turf. >> that could cause problems with the other members of the rival gang that may walk into the wrong neighborhood. >> reporter: and one of the solutions talked about at the conference, using the murals to fight graffiti. towards san francisco where they are working. >> the taggers, they will tend to respect their art work more than what they will do to move on typically. >> reporter: experts say that this alley in their mission district, they demonstrate what works and what doesn't. now on one side of the street, a loss artwork that will be untouched on the other side.

a jefferson award winner. today - you're goi every weekend we tell you about a jefferson award winner and today you'll see dozens of them as cbs5 reporter sharon chin shows you that all the 2010 winners got together this week for the annual medal ceremony. hundreds of people crowded into san francisco to pay tribute to the year's regional jefferson award winners, including the organization's co-founder sam beard. >> the 50 people honored here tonight, you are just award winners. and so is everyone else. you're more important to the

top national winners. if we ever lost the spirit of volunteering, it'd be a whole different story. five winners accepted the special silver medal. their names will be recommended for the national recognition. oakland's was keeping her promise to oakland's school children to fund their college education. she told the audience that the next goal is to open up a boarding school for the underprivileged kids. >> 95 to 80% of the students will graduate because they will not be in this room and on the ground that it will be in the dorms. she explained how volunteering with their project has changed the teenagers to learn how to prepare meals. >> and they have had someone with the eyes for them for helping me save that life and you're not the same. >> when you are accepting all the awards for their efforts to include the disabled in the

every day activities. she took the opportunity to express the feeling that will be common among all winners. it'll be the most awarding feeling in the world and i feel very blessed to be able to do work here today that i love. >> and they stepped up to the podium with the dog. it is one of many that their organizations has trained to alert the diabetics to a dangerous change in the blood sugar levels, saying he believes that volunteering is the way of life. >> the true happiness is not found in material possessions. but in reaching out in service, to others in engaging yourself in what truly matters. >> reporter: all the years put that philosophy to work around the bay area every day. we congratulate them all. sharon chin, cbs 5. and to nominate your local heros for an award,en line at cbssf.com.

a little bit more rain. and actually i know that we've got levels with what seems like a lot of rain this year, but because we have not gotten one in the last week or so, the percentage numbers are coming to be normal. 115% above average for rain in oakland and san jose. santa rosa, the rainy santa rosa at 22.7 inches. still 120% above average. so we'll add to it next weekend and it doesn't look like a lot though. the pinpoint forecast, enjoy this weekend as it will be nice all over northern california. 65 at fresno. 34 for santa rosa and for san jose, a little warmer than what you have seen for the overnight lows. numbers will be in the lower 60s for the bay area. a lot of sunshine around, but as you're headed to the coast,

commented on in 2011. or i could even do something like photos taken in san francisco, california. you can further refine that search. so it is everything that your friends have ever posted on facebook. you can search for it and you can also search for the public things as well. now, one real interesting example is actually dating. women in san francisco that like basketball, they like sushi and over 30 years old and facebook, they will actually give you a list of people who have elected to share that information. >> electing to share that information is the key here? >> correct. so if a person on facebook didn't elect to say they are female, they won't show up in the results. we're actually at a real interesting place right now where you as a user need to decide if you want data to show
